The deficit gap has increased dramatically compared to the pre-indyref years
In the context of ongoing campaign for Scottish independence, it's worth noting that the deficit gap between Scotland and the UK has grown significantly since the period leading up to the independence referendum in 2014. Prior to the referendum - with the 2011/12 figures that were available at the time - the Scottish Government could cite the GERS figures to credibly argue that Scotland was "paying its way" within the UK.
A framing that was often used by then First Minister Alex Salmond was to cite Scotland's share of revenues raised compared to its share of spending (as reported in the GERS figures). That framing now tells a very different story, as illustrated here.
